If you cast your mind back way to 2004 when that massive tsunami hit South East Asia, the one thing that survivors always mentioned was how the ocean literally disappeared as the water was sucked out to sea.
Right now we are witnessing a similar phenomenon when it comes to the upcoming election. Pundits and pollsters are finally starting to notice a tsunami forming that could possibly foretell a landslide victory for the Harris/Walz campaign.
What is this tsunami that I’m metaphorically speaking of?
Young women.
As I mentioned in my last article, a recent ABC/Ipsos poll that shows the Harris/Walz campaign has opened up a 13 point lead (51%-41%) with women voters, while Trump is 5 points up among men, 51%-46%, for an 18-point gap.
From The Guardian:
Among women under age 30, an overwhelming 67% plan to vote for Kamala Harris, while just 29% say they’ll back Donald Trump. But among young men, a majority – 53% – plan to vote for Trump, while 40% say they’ll support Harris, according to a New York Times/Sienna College poll. That’s an astonishing 51-percentage-point gender gap.
And according to the same poll, abortion rights has now surpassed the economy as the most important issue for women under the age of 45. Not only that, but new voter registrations for young Black and Latina women continues to astound pollsters and pundits alike. It’s clear the Dobbs decision is still foremost in women’s minds.
Here is that graphic again in case you missed it:
This is the tsunami that’s forming off the coast right now. Not only that but ten states will be asking the question of voters whether or not they should enshrine abortion rights as Constitutional amendments. Those states are:
Montana
Nevada
Arizona
Florida
Missouri
South Dakota
Nebraska
New York
Maryland
Colorado
It has become increasingly clear to the Trump campaign that abortion rights are going to be THE most important issue on the ballot this year. And a clear indication of Trump’s fear is how he’s been flip-flopping over Florida’s abortion rights ballot initiative.
Of course Trump being Trump cannot find a coherent strategy to attract women since, well, he’s Donald Trump and as the numbers indicate, young women are repulsed by him. Not only that but his running mate continues to attack women who don’t have children, women who choose to put career over motherhood, and women in general. These two are running literally THE most misogynistic campaign in the history of this country.
So of course they’re attracting young disaffected males to their campaign. In fact they are becoming their most reliable voting bloc. But clearly they are barking up the wrong tree. From the same Guardian article:
Many young men seem to admire Trump’s king-of-the-jungle vibe: he roars, he bellows, he boasts that no one can ever beat him (unless they cheat). But when you cut through Trump’s tough talk and look at the record, it becomes clear that Trump did very little for young men in his four years as president.
For many young men, health coverage and high health costs are a problem. On those matters, Trump will only make things worse. He has repeatedly promised to repeal Obamacare. That would be a disaster for millions of young men and women because they would no longer be able to be on their parents’ health plan until age 26. What’s more, repealing Obamacare will push up healthcare prices.
It’s very clear that these disaffected young men are influenced by social media and other online disinformation campaigns. In fact today the Department of Justice indicted two Russia Today employees with using certain key online influencers who either knowingly or unknowingly push Russian propaganda, which is typically very misogynistic and anti-LGBTQ+ in nature.
From the Justice Department:
“The Russian government has long sought to sow discord and chaos in the United States through propaganda and foreign malign influence campaigns,” said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division. “As alleged, the covert operations by RT employees exploited our free and open press and targeted millions of Americans as unwitting victims of Russia’s psychological warfare.”
“As alleged, the Russian state broadcaster RT orchestrated a massive scheme to influence the American public by secretly planting and financing a content creation company on U.S. soil,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams for the Southern District of New York. “The instruments of the scheme were RT employees Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, who managed the operation from Moscow using fake personas and shell companies, and the victims of the scheme were the American people, who received Russian messaging without knowing it. As the charges unsealed today demonstrate, this Office will work with our law enforcement partners to unmask and hold accountable all those who conduct malign influence campaigns in the United States, no matter how hard they try to hide their tracks.”
But no matter how hard they try, they cannot deny the huge momentum behind the Harris/Walz campaign. Blue Tsunami, baby!
Only 61 days to go.
